Green Party Review of Park & Ride

STURRY PARK & RIDE: THE GREEN PARTY VERDICT

Green Party Councillor Andy Harvey stands in front of another empty park and ride bus at Sturry

A Six-monthly Performance Monitoring Report into the Sturry Road Park & Ride was presented to the Canterbury City Council Scrutiny Committee on Wednesday 11th September 2024, and it does not make encouraging reading.

The Green Party have looked past the hype, at the detailed numbers presented to the Committee, and found that the scheme - the flagship of the new Council's Transport Policy - is neither economically or environmentally sustainable.

In summary, the scheme is actually increasing carbon emissions rather than lowering them, and is making a huge loss for the cash-strapped Council.

In terms of emissions, we worked out that it would actually be better to chauffeur passengers from Sturry to the City Centre in a Range Rover!

We make improvement suggestions around Park & Ride in our document, but this is only the start and there is much more to do with our local Transport. Canterbury City Council need to start thinking creatively about ways to reduce car traffic and increase active travel. Sadly, the Transport Strategy in the draft Local Plan does not adequately address this.
