Sewage Dumping

Fighting for Clean Water

Your local Green Party pioneered the citizen science water-testing programme launched in 2022 that
exposed the terrible scale of sewage pollution in our coastal waters.

Using a simple UN approved testing kit our testing showed that EColi levels were so high that there was frequently a threat to human health.

Three years on, and despite the excellent work of campaigns like SOS Whitstable and local protestors who started a water bill payment boycott, not much has changed.

Southern Water continue regularly to discharge untreated human waste into the seas close to local bathing waters, Whitstable yacht club, Whitstable Harbour, Hampton Pier , Herne Bay beaches and the Whitstable oyster fishery. It damages the local environment, threatens human health and threatens the local visitor economy.

Sewage pollution is a big national problem but at a local level, Greens are pushing for:

  • More pressure on Southern Water to clean up their act.
  • Better testing and information for the public on this vital public health issue.
  • Legally binding guarantees of improved wastewater treatment before ANY new housing development is approved.
