Green Wave in Whitstable: Historic Victory for Canterbury District Green Party!

The Canterbury District Green Party won its first ever seat on Kent County Council (KCC) at the elections held on Thursday 1st May, with Stuart Heaver scoring a resounding victory in Whitstable West, getting 35% of the vote.

This was achieved in the face of a political tidal wave which all but wiped out Labour and the Tories across Kent, and where The Reform Party took 57 of the 81 seats available.

Elsewhere in Canterbury our candidates all performed well and increased their vote share from the last elections in 2021.

We are grateful to each and every one of you who voted Green and everyone who campaigned with us: you were inspirational, and made a real difference. Thank you if you put up a board, donated money to the campaign, displayed a poster, did data entry, delivered leaflets, or knocked on doors.

Although the Liberal Democrats took a large number of seats in Kent, they had a lower county-wide vote share than us, and Labour’s share dropped below ours too. We are now the most popular progressive party in Kent against a background of anti immigrant, anti Net Zero rhetoric, which shows that we are connecting with voters.

There has never been a better time to join the Green Party, so if you are not already a member you can join here (link:https://join.greenparty.org.uk/)
